“The whole lot feels completely different. The whole lot that we have been doing.”
That is how Depeche Mode singer and songwriter Dave Gahan sums up life for his band for the reason that loss of life of founding keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022. Gahan and co-founder Martin Gore cast forward on their newest album with out him; it is referred to as Memento Mori. Roughly translated from Latin, it means: “Bear in mind, sooner or later you’ll die.”
It is a theme that runs all through the album. “Mortality, loss of life, you understand, and residing! It is about residing right here now with what we now have,” Gahan informed NPR’s Leila Fadel.
Whereas Fletch did not dwell to listen to this new music, Gahan says the album’s lead single, “Ghosts Once more,” would have been a favourite. “A traditional: type of melancholy/joyous moments of Depeche Mode writing, the place you form of hit that nerve of each issues. You’re feeling the enjoyment within the melody, however there is a foreboding within the lyric and the best way it is sung.”
Gahan wrote three of the songs on the album – a giant change from Martin Gore’s ordinary domination of these duties. However they got here to an understanding whereas making their earlier file, 2017’s Spirit.

He says the exhaustion that units in throughout an extended tour generally makes the choice for him. “All the time when it ends, I stroll away from it feeling, I am achieved now, you understand? That is it. I did my job.”
